Summer time in Buffalo presents a window of opportunity for anyone keen to experience the richness of the local culture,
through participation in activities that marks this most celebrated season of the year. This includes the various festivals celebrating the different origins of the people of Buffalo and also paying homage to the spirit of oneness and assimilation.
I was thrilled to be part and parcel of one such activity last Saturday, when I took part in the ‘The Dude’s Homebrew Competition’ at Resurgence Brewing Company, albeit as a voter and not a brewer! What made this event even more special was the cause, for which the twenty seven brewers and the more than 150 voters decided to dedicate their time for; Fighting Cancer. Some of the brewers are actual cancer survivors and one of them, whose brew was actually exhibited by a friend, is actually fighting the disease. My prayers are with him. All proceeds from this hugely successful event went to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
What struck me most, especially as a first timer to this event, was not the opportunity (in time and place) to consume as much as I could the ‘waters of relaxation’, but the creativity of the organizers to portray beer drinking in a different perspective giving beer lovers that opportunity at social responsibility. A quick chat with some of the brewers and voters led to a realization of how well organized social beer brewing and drinking can actually get!
These guys have well established associations such as the Niagara Association of Homebrewers and the Sultans of Swig Home Brewers, just but to mention a few.
If you want to learn more about Buffalo and its people, you need to then get out of that shell you trapped yourself in and get a feel of this amazing experience, especially this summer!
