Bollywood Dance Company Workshop

Local Bollywood dance company Devi Bollywood Dance is teaming up with Ashker’s Cafe to present a dance workshop titled “Bharata Natyam for New Audiences.” This classical South Indian dance style will be presented by instructor Jaan R. Freeman. In making his return to Buffalo for this weekend-long workshop, renowned teacher Freeman will present his Bharat Natyam repertoire, while “facilitating an interactive dialogue with audience members throughout a whirlwind of stories and rhythm.”

The event will be hosted at Ashker’s newly opened location, at 1526 Main Street, in Buffalo, and feature a schedule of events Saturday and Sunday, September 24 and 25. Starting on Saturday, at 6 p.m., Freeman will perform a full Bharata Natyam session, with an interactive question and answer session immediately following.

On Sunday, two sessions will be offered, beginning with an 11 a.m. instructional session of the fundamentals of Bharata Natyam; it concludes 1:30 p.m. with an instructional Bharata Natyam Intensive.

Event coordinator, and artistic director of Devi Bollywood Dance, Gaitrie Subryan said, “Jaan Freeman is well versed on Bharata Natyam, and the roots of Indian dance. Whether you’re a dancer, educator, observer, intrigued by the Indian culture, or a lover of the arts, this would be a great event to attend!”

Freeman is based out of New York City, and travels often to teach and perform. This is the second time Devi Bollywood is hosting an event in Buffalo with him; the last was in 2014.

“The goal of having this event is to expose and introduce South Indian Classical Dance, Bharata Natyam to individuals of all backgrounds, and communities,” added Subryan. “I am passionate about Bharata Natyam, especially the beauty, grace, and technique encompassed within this style. I was blessed to find a teacher later in my life, and I want to give everyone the opportunity to see it, feel it, try it, and fall in love with it.”
